European Shakuhachi Society

Jim Franklin is a founding member of the European Shakuhachi Society (ESS). From 2006 to July 2009 he was chairperson of the society. Since 2009 he has been a member of its advisory committee.

The ESS does not consider itself to be a school of shakuhachi, but rather an umbrella organisation, which has its aim the promotion of the music of the shakuhachi in all its forms in Europe. It fulfills this role through information exchange and its own events.

Since its inception in 2006, the ESS has offered regular Summer Schools:

The Summer Schools consist of workshops, instruction and concerts, always from a variety of schools. The teachers come from Europe and Japan.

Everyone who enjoys hearing or playing the music of the shakuhachi is invited to join the ESS.
